The latest
I rescued a chickadee from sure demise. She had crashed into a window on a Sunday morning. I wrote quite a lengthy story about it, but it is at the house, scribbled in my notebook. I sat outside in my pajamas and kept her warm with cupped hands while her eyes lost their unseeing glaze and her gaping beak finally closed. Small improvements marked the minutes. It took an hour and a half before she was able to fly away, landing first in the cedar tree. I'll never forget the feel of her delicate foot grasping the skin fold just under my left ring finger. I was surprised, delighted, by the strength that she possessed. She also had a chickadee friend who sat in a bush not far away from me, and watched and waited the entire time. He joined her in the cedar tree and they eventually flew off together.
